About St. Basil in Troy

Illustrative parish fellowship scene; not a photograph of a specific St. Basil gathering.
St. Basil Greek Orthodox Church began in Troy in 1931 as a spiritual anchor and cultural home for Greek immigrant families in Troy, Watervliet, Cohoes, and the wider Capital District. For nearly a century, our community has preserved Orthodox Christian worship, Hellenic heritage, and civic responsibility across multiple generations.
A Living Community Built Along the Hudson
During the early twentieth century, Troy was a major industrial center renowned for textile manufacturing, detachable collars, ironwork, and river shipping. Greek immigrant families seeking work and establishing new homes brought with them their inherited Orthodox Christian faith and regional traditions. On October 26, 1931 - the Feast of St. Demetrios - the parish was formally organized in Troy, taking its patronal name of St. Vasilios (St. Basil) through the generosity of benefactor William Vellis.
The parish quickly grew into a regional home in Troy. Through the Hudson River crossings, families from Troy, Watervliet, and neighboring Capital District communities gathered for Sunday Orthros and the Divine Liturgy, celebrated baptisms and weddings, and participated in parish ministries including the Philoptochos Society, Choir, Altar Boys, Sunday School, Youth Dance Group, AHEPA, and the Pontos Society of the Capital Region.

Ethics & Responsible Play
Ethical Reflection and Community Welfare
Faith and heritage are not isolated from the realities of everyday society. St. Basil the Great, our patron, was renowned throughout 4th-century Caesarea for his compassionate care of the needy, founding the Basiliad - a complex of hospitals, hospices, and workshops for travelers and the impoverished.
In that same spirit of care, this site includes plain-language pages about gambling, New York rules, and ways to find support. These topics are presented with respect for families and the people directly affected.
